On a side note, yesterday I kicked *** literally in my pool, went to the grocery (with help) and generally had a GREAT day.
My pain started to rise about 7 PM, and by midnight I don't remember anything and fiance said I was "up", sitting up in a chair, ALL NIGHT, talking to myself. I am only taking 50 mgs of Topomax... I STILL can't talk right. So I'm going back to bed as almost every word here I misspell and it's frustrating and I could fall over asleep anyways... Does anyone get this? Gentle hugs to anyone else in pain today or feeling alone. I love you all. |

Is it a blood sugar thing??
Or do you think it's the Topamax?

Years ago when I was trying to get off of all meds, as I was slowing down, the less I took, the more I acted drugged. I acted drunk as I took less. Could be as you are taking less topomax it is having an affect on you. Don't know but I know that had happened to me with different meds. I would sleep walk. Get up at night and light the stove to make tea. My husband was a wreck. He couldn't sleep worrying I was going to burn the house down. I had fallen down the stairs. My mother-in-law had to move in with us. It was embarassing. That's when I checked in to the hospital in NY. The best thing I ever did. Just had to get all the crap out of my body. It wasn't that I needed it any more, it was that my body wouldn't let me stop taking it. Good luck. Have your fiance keep an eye on you so you don't hurt yourself and feel better. Linda

Hi Tamara,
I take 100mg of Topomax a day. I find that there are days that I do slur my words and speak gibberish. As far as I am aware I don't sit up and talk to myself throughout the night. I agree with Jo have you checked your blood sugar that sounds like you might be hypoglycemic. Call your doc Tamara.. I would hate to see you have a reaction because of your diabetes.. Many Hugs Dawn

Possibly the blood sugar - even though I wasn't testing nec. high...
Because of ER trip, I had CT scan with contrast fluid where I couldn't take the Metformin for two days. Although the sugar was not terribly high, it was higher than what is recommended...and that could result in sleepiness like that. I am still exhausted, and just drink a bit and then fall asleep with all sorts of noise around again...this is very weird, and the only "new" thing is my extended swimming with the swimming board. It could be though that I over exercised, and I was over physical on that particular day because I just felt so good and so normal that day, and the swelling kicked in big-time. This was a very big surprise. |

I have found now when I exercise to the degree my therapist wants me too
Its waaay too much and the RSD/ Fibro sets in BIG time even though the rest of my body feels strong and my mind is clear and free of crapola. I'm learning to acknowledge that too much is too much Taper off and find that happy medium. And to top it off I've had sleep apnea with crazy RLS and aches, pains for the last couple of months. Silly me, I used to laugh at the drug commercial of RLS thinking there is a damn drug for just everything not realizing I have had it ALL along not just the pain of finding comfort in order to sleep. Just after our fun lunch and me making myself walk on Tuesday I've been in such a bad way It also could be a barometer contribution too Grrrr.... Happy medium to strive for! |

Hi Tam,
have you ever tried inulin to help you to decrease your blood sugars?? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inulin http://www.raysahelian.com/inulin.html http://www.foodproductdesign.com/art...641health.html perhaps the prob with your behaviour combined with the topamx. Has too many side effects so I chose not to take it....are you taking it for migraines or nerve pain??? b/c there is a decent drug nortriptyline. It is what is taken from the drug amitriptyline when your body metabolizes it. Amitrip. has too many side effects......so nortip. is a better drug if you can tolerate it. It is for depression, nerve pain and also for migraine prophylaxis. Not sure if this helps ???? Take care Love and hugs, Victoria

HI Tam...When I tried the Topomax and got to the 50mgs I was slurring my words like crazy. I felt "high" for a lack of a better word. I spoke foolishily and felt stupid. I actually drove right into the middle of the intersection. Then I bawled all weekend. I came back off them and then it all stopped. I know you are hoping this will help your pain, as did I, but it wasn't worth it for. Keep trying it and see how you do. But what you are talking about is a side effect. There was a page about Topomax online when I did some research. I will try to find you the link.

Here's the scoop from what fiance and I have concluded:
I've been taking 50 mgs. of Topomax for over 6 months now. So I don't think it's the Topomax - but I agree with everyones' warnings and also want to spread the word on that. We've discussed how BAD the Topomax and the manic / crazy behavior has been when my docs made me hit 100 to 125 mgs. I had two major mania breakdowns with Topomax, several years ago, and learned my lesson. Then, after a long break, I tried it again, as it did give some relief from nerve pain. So far, as long as I take just the 50 mgs. in the AM, and no more, I am "ok." However, this particular weird breakdown incident I think was different because it came after a particularly "physical" day, and/or, it may be from the diabetes II that came on with the Lyrica. So I want to warn people about the Lyrica med also! After one month with Metformin, and a strict dietary regime, as well as repeated attempts at exercise, (in between being bedridden from the exercise), my blood sugar is pretty stable between 105 - 110, which I understand is pretty darn good. I've read a few good books on diabetes II and I am really serious about beating this. I don't want MORE meds, and / or MORE medical problems. So at first I thought maybe it was blood sugar (it tested 158 during that night), but now fiance and I concluded it was just a matter of too much exercise for my ol' TOS body. Sometimes / some days / once in a while I can feel so good, that I don't want to stop swimming or walking, and because I know that probably the next day and for maybe the next few weeks I'll be bedridden, so I just don't want the good feeling to end just yet. I hate it when I'm having a good day, and I know that by that night, or very soon anyways, it's going to end. Don't some of you all feel the same way??? But now I learned that overdoing it can be pretty bad, and bring on a lot more than just a flare, also. At least for me! Thank you sweet ones for all of your concern and care. Makes a person feel lucky! |

I did the same thing when I was beginning to feel better -I felt good, so I did wayyy more than I should have and suffered after.
It's a fine line of slowly building up so you don't get the flare after, remember you have been quite inactive for a long time, so slow and easy is the best plan.
